1x Cree Digital 3.6V-9V

Construction

The head of this light has a crenellated bezel which can be unscrewed to drop out the lens and reflector. The entire head itself is glued to the battery tube. After taking out the lens and reflector, the LED module can be unscrewed by using a pair of needle nose pliers. The module looks very similar to the one in the U2-style Clone accept the "-" wire is soldered on differently. The module in my sample did not have any thermal paste applied below the star PCB. To apply your own, you'll need to de solder one of the contact wires first. The reflector is made of aluminum and has an orange peel texture. Alignment between the emitter and reflector is perfect. The lens is made of regular uncoated glass and has a rubber o-ring between it and the bezel. The head has some fins machined onto it, they are just cosmetic though. Help it adds to heat sinking would be marginal if any. Coating is done in Type 2 anodizing and is very nice and smooth, no marks or scratches at all.

As mentioned earlier, the battery tube is glued to the head. Coating is very good on the tube as well. A good amount of the battery tube is covered in a diamond textured knurling. The knurling is pretty rough and it's large surface area provides very good grip. The internal diameter of the battery tube provides ample room for anything from 2x CR1230 lithiums to 1x 18650 Li-Ion protected cell. There will be some battery rattle, especially with CR123 cells. The threads on this light are smooth and fit nicely, I did not experience any grinding or cross-threading during testing. Even though the star PCB doesn't have thermal paste applied to it's base, heat dissipation still works well. The entire body gets warm after about 2 minutes of continuous running on high mode. There are rubber o-rings at the tail end as well as between the bezel and the head.

The tail cap houses a reverse push button switch with a checkered texture rubber cap. I like the fact that the tail cap and the battery tube are of the same width where they touch so they fit nice and flushed when tightened. Most of the other lights have tail caps which have a slightly wider diameter than the battery tube. The rest of the tail cap is machined horizontal cuts running it's length to help with grip as well. The rubber cap slightly protrudes and doesn't allow for a secure tail stand.

Output

The beam profile has a narrow spot with a medium spill. The beam is nice and smooth with no artifacts to be found thanks to the well aligned textured reflector. Beam color is a cool white with a slight violet tint.

Operating modes are:
Off > High > Low

Running on a 1x 18650 cell provides a good balance of output and runtime similar to the U2-style Clone. The difference in output between high and low makes this light suitable for medium to long range use. This light doesn't do well on protected 16340 cells though, to me the 25% increase in output doesn't warrant the amount reduction in runtime. Also the low mode on 16340 cells is almost as bright as the high mode on a 18650 cell, which makes it only usable for long range work.

Conclusion

The Good - Nicely designed body with good grip and ergonomics. Good performance on 18650 cells with well chosen levels for high and low.

The Bad - Doesn't work well with 16340 cells.

The Relative - The reverse push button, some people like it because it reduces the chance of accidental turn on while stored in pockets or bags, others hate it because it doesn't allow momentary on functionality.
