| Construction |
The head of the P1D CE houses an XR-E emitter and focused by a textured aluminum reflector. The head of the P1D is slightly longer than the P1 CE, thus making the light's overall length slightly longer as well. Emitter and reflector are aligned very well, perhaps leaning just a hair to one side but really it's almost perfect. The lens used is made or hardened AR coated glass for increased light transmission as compared to regular uncoated glass. The head has a band of diamond textured knurling which makes it easy to twist for single handed operation. The hexagonal faces machined on the battery tube does help a little. The emitter module is sealed inside the head and is not easily disassembled. Something different about this Fenix model is that they have opted to use brass in the head module for better heat management.
They body of the P1D CE is pretty compact when compared to other single CR123 powered lights out there. It will easily fit into any shirt or pants pocket without being too obvious, but more suited to be carried in the supplied elastic holster. The entire light is coated in Type 3 anodizing. Anodizing is well finished, clean and smooth, without any marks or scratches. The aluminum body of the P1D CE is quite thin, but this in turn makes it very light. I doubt this would make the light any less rugged though. Inside the body is all nice and cleanly machined. Unlike the P1 CE which has the battery rattle when the head is loosened in off position, the P1D CE does not have this issue. The P1D CE has a spring at the bottom of the battery tube for the "-" battery contact. The conduction of the electrical circuit is made by the rim of the battery tube and head instead of the "+" button end of the battery as with the P1 CE. The threads on this light are almost perfect. They are very smooth and free from accidental cross-threading, you won't need to turn them counter-clockwise to get the threads to align. Throughout the entire testing phase of this light, I did not experience any sign of cross-threading. Take note that UltraFire's gray protected 16340 cells with button tops are a little too long for the P, and part of the rubber o-ring will be exposed.

| Output |
The P1D CE has 5 output levels in total in the following sequence:
Off > Medium > High > Low > Strobe > S.O.S.
Output from this little light blows away any other light with a similar form factor, this particular model uses a higher flux Q5 bin emitter. It's really bright, but due to its small size and thin aluminum body, it gets hot quite fast when running on high mode. Even more so when running it on a 3.7V 16340 cell. While the P1D CE is able to run on 16340 cells, it does lose its ability to output the low and medium levels due to the higher input voltage. Running on high with a 16340 cell if fine and does not damage the light. Do take note that the circuit uses PWM to achieve the low and medium levels, and the high frequency pulsing on these levels is detectable when waving the light around. However it really doesn't affect practical usage at all. Tint on my sample is on the cool side, with a slight violet hue. Runtime on a single CR123 cell is very good considering the amount of light that is put out by the P1D CE and regulation is also good.

| Conclusion |
The Good - Nice compact size, efficient circuit and very bright output. Battery does not rattle in off position.
The Bad - Battery tube is slightly too short for single handed operation. Rubber o-ring is exposed when using longer 16340 cells.
The Relative - Multiple output levels good for generally use. Low and medium level functionality is lost when running on 3.7V 16340 cells. Beam has a slightly cool tint. |
