| Construction |
The head of the CE-R houses the electronics and an XR-E emitter. Physically it's very similar to the C-LE, in fact it fits perfectly onto the C-LE's AA battery tube. It has a textured aluminum reflector which is slightly misaligned with the emitter. It's minor and doesn't affect the beam profile. An orange rubber o-ring is placed between the bezel and lens for water resistance. Around the external of the head there are 2 rings of knurling. These aren't the common diamond textured knurling, instead it's a series of slanted lines running all around. They provide good grip for turning the light on and off. Further down you will find a rubber o-ring providing water resistance for the battery tube. The o-ring is quite thick, but the resistance it provides for the twist action is not very tight, similar to the Fenix P1. The type 3 coating on the head is very nicely done, consistent and smooth. However my sample did have a spec of adhesive on it.
Like the head, the entire body is coated nicely in type 3 anodizing. Towards the top you will find some print of the Hyperion brand, the similarity in style to the JETBeam brand is uncanny. Almost the entire battery tube is covered in knurling. This, together with the knurling on the head, they provide good grip for it's twist switch operation. Also, because the rubber o-ring isn't very tight, twisting with one hand is easily done. The threads on the CE-R are all nice and smooth too. I did not experience any grinding or cross-threading at all. This is much better than the original C-LE which had really rough threads which required quite a few twists to break-in the threads. At the bottom of the battery tube there're 2 holes for attaching lanyards or key rings. The 2 holes are slightly slanted on my sample, purely a cosmetic issue and doesn't affect functionality. When the light is in the off position, the battery does rattle slightly, even with the foam pad applied. The entire light is just slightly longer than the Fenix P1 by about 1.5mm.

| Output |
The C-LE has 5 advertised modes. Cycling between modes is done by switching the light on and off within 2 seconds.
Operating modes:
"Off" > "Middle" > "Low" > "High" > "Strobe" > "Standby"
The CE-R's circuit is specified as being able to handle an input voltage range of 0.8V-4.2V. So, since the it's head fits perfectly on a C-LE V1.2's battery tube, I've included runtime tests and output values for 14500 and AA cells in addition to 16340 cells. The beam profile of the CE-R is nice and smooth with a medium sized hotspot, again very similar to the C-LE. The tint is a nice white with a slightly warm tint, very close to sunlight white. The low and medium modes on the CE-R is achieved by PWM, it uses a similar frequency as the C-LE V1.2 meaning that the pulsing is less obvious.

| Conclusion |
The Good - Well built with good type 3 anodizing and generous use of knurling for grip. Circuit accepts a wide range of input voltage enabling it to run on various cell types.
The Bad - Shorter runtimes on 3.7V li-ion cells compared to other lights with similar output.
The Relative - Nice color tint, close to sunlight white.Uses PWM for low and medium levels. Twist switch. Slight battery rattle when off. More versatile if you also own a C-LE. |
