Construction

The ConneXion is a very small, single AA powered light with a push button switch. Its noticeably slimmer than the Fenix L1D. The head is made up of 2 separate parts which can be easily unscrewed. The bezel houses the AR coated glass lens and textured aluminum reflector, their alignment seems just slightly off center. There is also a GITD rubber o-ring between the lens and bezel. Due to the small size of the ConneXion, I find myself constantly accidentally unscrewing the bezel instead of the entire head during battery changes. This isn't a significant issue since the mode actual usage and mode changes are all controlled via the rear push button switch. The bottom half of the head houses the emitter and electronics. Externally the head has a simple design with 2 recessed lines and a band of knurling around the bottom area.

The body is basically made of a single piece of aluminum cylinder housing the battery and switch. The entire light is coated in Type 2 anodizing which is smooth and consistent throughout, though I did notice that the body has a very dark green hue to it. I should also mention that LumaPower advertises that the anodizing use on the ConneXion has hardness reinforcement. From the look and feel of the finish, it does seem nicer than the standard Type 2 anodizing of other lights. There are 2 flat faces and 2 narrow slots machined onto the body as aesthetic touches. The knurling between the head and battery tube is pretty thinly cut and I did encounter some cross-threading and squeaking during battery changes. The rubber o-ring used is also quite thin, but isn't a big issue since this isn't a twist-activated light. Right towards the end of the battery tube is a band of textured knurling for grip as well. As mentioned before, the entire body of the ConneXion comes in one piece. As such the switch in not easily removable, and the same goes for the clip. The switch has quite a soft amount of tension, but because it lies flush against the end of the body, accidental activation is unlikely. Engaging the switch provides a nice tactile feedback with an audible click. The clip is somewhat flimsy for my taste as its basically a thick piece of metal wire, similar to a paper clip. A can foresee it being bent out of shape with rough use, and because the clip is not removable, it will not be easy to bend it back to provide a good grip again. The GITD rubber switch cap sticks out just a little out the end. When off, the light is able to tail stand but wobbles slightly. When clicked on, the light is able to stand stable on its tail end.

Output

The ConneXion houses a Q5 XR-E emitter. Its advertised as being able to output a maximum of 100 lumens running on a single AA cell. It will output over 120 lumens when running on a 3.7V 14500 cell. My sample is a nice neutral white, leaning slightly to the warm side at lower the output levels. Beam profile produced by the ConneXion produces a smooth beam, The dark ring around the hotspot is present but not as obvious compared to other lights using XR-E emitters.

Mode changes are done via half-pressing the switch on and off within a second. When the desired level is reached, simply fully depress the switch to click it permanently on. The regulation and runtime provided by the ConneXion is above average, more than sufficient for general use. The lower levels on the ConneXion uses a very high PWM frequency which I managed to notice while waving the light around. However not everyone is able to notice this because other people whom I've asked did not notice the PWM effect. I reconfirmed this by looking at the light using my camera set to a high shutter speed.

The operating modes are as follows:
Off > High > Medium > Low


Conclusion

The Good - Good regulation and runtime. Small, pocketable and lightweight for easy carry.

The Bad - Flimsy clip. A minor issue with the small size is that the bezel may be accidentally removed during battery changes.

The Relative - Clip designed for head-down carry. Beam tint is a neutral white, leaning slightly to the warm side. Able to stably tail stand only when switch is clicked on. Simply 3 levels of brightness without any strobe or S.O.S. modes.
