Construction

The D-mini is a flashlight that is designed to be both small, and able to throw a very focused and narrow intense spot of light. It’s head is a fairly large part of the entire light. Right at the front end is a removable plain bezel in which the lens falls into place. A GITD (glow-in-the-dark) o-ring is placed on the inner facing side of the lens, acting as a water/moisture seal. You will need to remove the bezel to swap in the reflector of your choice. Included in the package is a smooth and textured reflector, both of which are nicely finished in terms of machining and polished coating. The threads between the bezel and head are of average thickness and very smooth. The head itself is quite plain looking, apart for some branding printed on its surface. The type 3 anodized coating is smooth and consistent throughout. When screwed on to the battery tube, the reflector and emitter align nicely.

The battery tube is quite small as expected from a single CR123 light, but its rather large head emphasis this even more. The emitter module screws into the front end of the battery tube, and not into the head as in most other lights. There’s a very narrow band of knurling about 0.7cm wide which runs around the mid-area of the battery tube. The texture of the knurling isn’t very aggressive. Coupled with its narrow width, don’t expect it to give good grip. If you happen to screw on the tail cap too tightly, you might end up unscrewing the head instead during your next battery change. Overall anodizing is smooth as well, no complains here. Threads on either ends of the battery tube are very smooth and cleanly cut, however they’re not anodized. O-rings are placed on either ends as well for water resistance. The tail cap is pretty standard, and houses a forward push button switch. The GITD rubber switch cap comes pre-installed; you will need a pair of needle nose pliers or tweezers to screw out the switch module if you want to swap it for the black rubber cap. The tail cap has some ridges machined on its outer surfaces which help with grip. The switch has an average tension and rather long travel before clicking on. It provides good feedback both in terms of audible click and tactile feel. The switch cap sticks out the tail end a fair bit, so the D-mini isn't able to tail stand. There are also 2 small holes for lanyard attachments.

Output

Functionality wise, this Digital SE (Special Edition) version of the D-mini has some key differences from the regular D-mini. Firstly it has 3 selectable levels of output, and secondly it uses a higher flux, Q5 bin Cree XR-E emitter for an added boost in output. Changing of modes is done by half-pressing the switch within 2 seconds.

Operating modes are as follows:
Off > 100% > 30% > 10%

There is no memory feature present in this light which means that it will always come on at 100% brightness at the first press of the switch. The Beam profile is very narrow as expected since its reflectors were designed for throwing an intense spot. The intensity of the spill beam produced is almost insignificant when compared to its hot spot in practical usage. While this makes the D-mini an excellent pocket sized performer at long distances, it usefulness at close range with lower levels are more limited. Do take note that with the smooth reflector installed, there is a noticeable dark area right in the middle of the hot spot and some ring artifact around the spill area as well. Color temperature on my sample is slightly on the warm side. The D-mini Digital maintains a very decent regulation considering it’s running off a single CR123 or 16340 cell.

Conclusion

The Good - Produces a very intense hot spot for a pocket light this size. Provides very good runtime and maintains steady regulation. Convenient holster.

The Bad - Ergonomics might not suite everyone, sometimes difficult to unscrew the tail cap.

The Relative - Uses a forward push button switch, but practically unusable for momentary activation since it might switch to another brightness level. Is not able to tail stand. Beam has a slightly warm color temperature.
