Construction

The Mini Golden Cree looks exactly like the Fenix P1 in terms of design and dimensions. Difference is that its slightly lighter and it's anodized in a nice and shiny gold color. The first thing I noticed looking directly at the head is the misaligned emitter. The hotspot is slightly affected by this and is skewed a little. The alignment is similar to the Cree Stainless Steel light I reviewed earlier. The reflector is made of aluminum as has a light texture to it. Take note that the textured reflector in this light is slightly worse that other similar budget prices lights. It's a little uneven and there are blotches here and there but luckily they cause any artifacts in the beam profile. The lens is made of regular glass and is a little loose even after tightening the emitter module all the way down. It's sandwiched between the head and the reflector cup and I couldn't find a way to tighten the reflector cup further.

The entire light feels sturdy enough and the coating is nice and smooth, thought it will get slippery if you gave greasy hands. As mentioned earlier, it is also very light weight. With regular CR123 cells, the front end feels just a little heavier than the battery tube. With 16340 cells, the weight distribution balances out nicely. With it's size and weight, this is definitely a pocketable light and a nice change from the usual black flashlights. The exterior of the body is actually very nicely done, machining is smooth with no scratches or marks on it. The band of knurling around the head is also nice and consistent all around. On the inside the threading is smooth and doesn't cause any grinding or squeaking. Above the knurling on the head is a rubber o-ring which came lubricated and gives moderate resistance for the twist action. The "+" contact has a generous blob of solder on it, so using flat topped 16340 cells shouldn't pose any problems. Finally at the tail end there's a hole for attaching lanyards or straps.

Output

Running on CR123 cells the output isn't really impressive. It runs for about 3 hours to 50%, the Fenix L1D-CE puts out about 80% more light and runs for about 4:30 to 50% running on just a single AA cell no less. On a 16340 cell it puts out slightly more light than the L1P-CE on medium but with only 25% the runtime, and it gets very hot too. Overall I can't say I'm impressed with this light's output performance. Then again, for the price it's a pretty good balance.

Conclusion

The Good - Sturdy feel, nicely done finish in a shiny golden color which is a nice change from the usual black and grey. Twist action feels good. Output is pretty good on 16340 cells for a light of this size.

The Bad - Mediocre performance on CR123. Gets really hot on 16340.

The Relative - A nice change from the standard black colored budget lights. Looks pretty good on your key chain.
