Construction
The Photon Freedom Micro is a very small coin cell powered key chain light. Having it attached to any of your accessories adds negligible weight, great if you find regular AA sized lights too big. The body of the Freedom Micro is made of polyurethane and comes in 2 parts. The main body which houses all the electronics components, and the battery cover which snaps off by lifting the tiny tab on the rear end. The battery contact points are coated with 24K gold for improved electrical contact. The standard sales package comes with some nice accessories. The quick release ring is basically a key chain with a spring loaded clip. The hands-free clip snaps onto the Freedom Micro which enables it to be clipped onto a cap for example. There's also a magnet inlaid on the hands-free clip which allows you to place the light on metal surfaces. The push button switch has almost no travel, much like the buttons on a mobile phone. It's able to work both as a click-on switch or a pure momentary-on switch, configured by the firmware.

Output

The Freedom Micro uses a Nichia 5mm LED commonly found is most cheap LED lights. It comes in a variety of colors including ultra violet and infra red, the light reviewed here is the white version. The light produced it pre-focused and doesn't require any additional optic or reflectors. Beam profile is a smooth spot which quite a variation in color temperature. The middle of the hotspot is a cool violet color, while the corona has a very noticeable warm yellow tint.

The user interface provides a multitude of modes and options which is quite impressive from a light this size. Output intensity can be ramped in moderately smooth steps from low to high. There are also 3 strobes and an S.O.S. mode available. As mentioned before, the behavior of the switch is also controlled by the firmware.

Output modes are as follows:

Single Click:
Off > On Max. Brightness

Click and Hold:
Off > Min.-to-Max. Brightness Ramping > S.O.S. > Slow Strobe > Medium Strobe > Fast Strobe

Click and Hold:
On > Max.-to-Min. Brightness Ramping > S.O.S. > Slow Strobe > Medium Strobe > Fast Strobe

Multiple Clicks:
Sets click-on or momentary switch modes.

Conclusion

The Good - Very convenient size and weight. Useful accessories for practical work and applications.

The Bad - Output isn't regulated and dims very sharply within the first few minutes of use.

The Relative - Battery cap can be hard to snap off without a picking tool. Uses coin cell batteries. Beam has a variation of warm and cool color temperature.
